Universal’s Islands of Adventure is one of the most popular theme parks in Orlando and a key part of Universal Orlando Resort. Known for its immersive lands and high-thrill attractions, it’s often considered the more intense and adrenaline-focused park compared to Universal Studios Florida.

The park is divided into several themed “islands,” each with its own unique atmosphere, ranging from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to Jurassic Park, Marvel Super Hero Island, and Toon Lagoon. Every area is designed with incredible attention to detail, making the transition between lands feel natural and highly immersive.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Islands of Adventure

I started my day in the most immersive and iconic area of Islands of Adventure: the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I arrived here aboard the Hogwarts Express, one of the most unique experiences at Universal Orlando Resort, which dropped me off directly in Hogsmeade.

From the very first moment, the level of detail is incredible. The entire village of Hogsmeade is recreated with obsessive precision, from the snow-covered rooftops to the smallest architectural details. Walking through its streets truly feels like stepping inside the Harry Potter universe.

Every building, shop, and corner reflects the magical atmosphere of the films. You’ll find all the iconic wizarding locations, including the famous Ollivanders Wand Shop, where you can experience the wand choosing ceremony just like in the movies. It’s one of the most engaging and memorable experiences in Islands of Adventure, especially for fans of Harry Potter.

The attention to detail in this area is simply on another level, making the Wizarding World of Harry Potter one of the absolute highlights of Universal Orlando.

The main attraction in this area is without a doubt the one inside Hogwarts Castle: Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. But what makes this experience truly special is that it actually starts long before you get on the ride. The queue itself is part of the attraction. You’ll walk through some of the most iconic locations inside Hogwarts Castle, moving from the dark dungeons to the greenhouses filled with mandrakes, then into the castle corridors where the portraits come to life just like in the films. From Dumbledore’s office to the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom, every room is recreated with incredible attention to detail.

Once on the ride, the experience is absolutely spectacular. The attraction uses a robotic arm system mounted on a track, which moves in every direction to simulate flying on a broomstick. The ride cleverly alternates between large 3D screens and real animatronics, creating a fast-paced and highly immersive journey through the Harry Potter world.

It’s one of the most unique and technically impressive rides in Islands of Adventure. That said, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who suffers from strong motion sickness, as the constant movement combined with screens can be quite intense.

Hogwarts Castle in the night

Another incredible attraction in this area is Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, one of the most popular rides in Islands of Adventure. This launch coaster features multiple accelerations, small drops, and a dynamic layout that weaves through the ruins surrounding Hogsmeade. The ride is genuinely fantastic. It combines thrilling coaster elements with immersive storytelling, including several scenes with animatronics placed along the track. Everything is perfectly integrated into the environment, making the experience feel like a real journey through the Forbidden Forest. There’s also a small surprise at the end that I won’t spoil, because it’s definitely something worth experiencing for the first time without knowing.

One of the most unique details of this ride is the train design, which is shaped like Hagrid’s iconic motorbike from the Harry Potter films.

The real downside of this attraction, however, is the queue. It’s notoriously slow and often considered one of the longest waits in all Universal parks. When I visited, average wait times for most rides were around one hour, but this one never dropped below three hours and even reached up to five hours at some points. If you’re planning your day at Islands of Adventure, this is definitely a ride you need to prioritize early, otherwise you risk spending a huge portion of your day just waiting in line.

Jurassic Park Area and VelociCoaster

The next area of the park is Jurassic Park, one of the most iconic themed lands in Islands of Adventure, with a completely different atmosphere compared to the Wizarding World.

One of the main attractions here is Jurassic Park River Adventure, a classic water ride that takes you on a boat journey through the dinosaur habitats. The first part is quite calm and scenic, with animatronic dinosaurs along the way, but things quickly change as the ride turns darker and more intense. It all builds up to a final drop inside a massive structure, where you come face to face with a T-Rex just before plunging down. It’s a fun and well-themed attraction, especially if you want a break from roller coasters.

The real highlight of this area, however, is VelociCoaster. This is an extreme launch coaster featuring two powerful launches, and it’s honestly one of the best roller coasters I’ve ever experienced. It’s incredibly fast, surprisingly long, and keeps the intensity high from start to finish.

One of its most unique elements is the section that runs right above the lagoon, creating the feeling of being suspended over the water. It adds a lot to the overall experience, especially during the outer-bank turns. Built by Intamin, the coaster is exactly what you would expect from them: extremely smooth, fast, and perfectly paced. Every element flows into the next, making it one of the most complete and satisfying rides in the entire park.

It’s also particularly interesting because, being a more modern ride, it’s inspired by the newer Jurassic World movie franchise. Along the queue, which is very sleek and modern, you can even see the iconic animatronic of Blue, the velociraptor from the films, which adds a really cool and immersive touch to the experience.

Toon Lagoon Water Rides

The next area we explored was the water-themed land, Toon Lagoon, which is perfect if you’re looking to cool off during a hot day at Islands of Adventure.

The first ride we tried was Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls, a classic log flume ride. I honestly didn’t remember the name at first, but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The ride is quite long, with a fun layout and a final drop that is actually pretty good. You don’t get completely soaked here, though. I only got a few splashes, and I think it also depends a lot on where you sit in the boat, whether you’re in the front or the back.

You definitely can’t say the same about Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges.

This is, without a doubt, the best river rapids ride I’ve ever done. The theming is fantastic, even along the edges of the river, which are usually just plain concrete in most parks. Here, everything is fully detailed and immersive, making the whole experience much more engaging.

The ride itself is intense, with several drops, including one that’s surprisingly steep. But the real highlight is how wet you get. And when I say wet, I mean completely soaked.

You will come out of this ride absolutely drenched from head to toe. The warning sign at the entrance is not exaggerating at all. There are multiple moments during the ride where you get hit by massive water splashes, especially an evil water jet right at the beginning that already sets the tone for what’s coming next.

Skull Island: Reign of Kong

The next ride I experienced was Skull Island: Reign of Kong. The attraction itself is quite enjoyable, and I think it probably feels even better at night. The whole area has a slightly horror vibe, with torches, skulls, and a dark atmosphere that really adds to the experience.

The ride itself is very similar to Fast & Furious: Supercharged at Universal Studios. You board a large expedition truck and go through a relatively short track with essentially two main scenes, where massive screens on the sides simulate attacks from giant creatures, including insects and, of course, King Kong. The vehicle sits on a motion base platform, which uses lateral movements, vibrations, and water effects to simulate the action happening around you. It’s well done and immersive enough, even if the concept is not particularly innovative.

That said, I do find it a bit repetitive to have two rides with such a similar system within the same resort. Between the two, however, I definitely preferred this one by far. The theming is stronger, and even the queue is really well done, with a dark and mysterious atmosphere that sets the tone perfectly before the ride begins.

Marvel Super Hero Island

The last area I visited before leaving the park was Marvel Super Hero Island, a completely different setting compared to the other lands, with a more colorful and comic-book style atmosphere.

The first ride I tried here was The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, a classic dark ride that combines physical sets with screens, special effects, and a few unexpected moments along the way. It’s a very enjoyable attraction and still holds up really well.

The theming is inspired by the classic Spider-Man comics from the 90s, which gives the ride a unique charm but also makes it feel slightly dated in some aspects. You can clearly notice the mix between the era in which the ride was built and the older comic-style aesthetic. It’s also worth noting that this attraction is not based on the more recent Spider-Man movies, as those rights belong to Disney. In fact, you can find a completely different Spider-Man ride at Disneyland Paris, which is inspired by the newer film version of the character.

To wrap up my day, I rode The Incredible Hulk Coaster, one of the most iconic attractions in Marvel Super Hero Island. This is an inverted launch coaster, with the unique feature of starting with a surprise launch directly into an uphill section. Instead of the classic slow chain lift, you’re accelerated upwards, which makes the first drop even more intense as you hit it at a much higher speed.

It was actually my first time riding a coaster of this type, and I really enjoyed it. The ride is fast, powerful, and delivers a great sense of intensity from start to finish.

It’s also a ride that really shines at night, when everything is lit up in green, perfectly matching the Hulk theme and making the whole experience even more visually striking.

The queue is also very well done, with a futuristic lab setting and a large central structure that looks like some kind of energy reactor. It uses electric plasma effects similar to those spherical plasma lamps, which adds a really cool visual touch while you’re waiting in line.
